It's Brown Season

Urgh, after a lovely holiday on the west coast where the grass is green and the flowers are blooming, we returned home to see the usual early Spring display of (depressing) brown.

*sigh*

The vacation was great!  We went "home" to see family and attend a memorial tea to honour my dear Grandmother who died on February 1st.  It was lovely to be by the sea and we made sure to visit plenty of beaches while there.  We gathered beach glass to add to our collection and inhaled as much sea air as we could!  I especially enjoyed haunting a few (very quaint) used book stores in Sidney and bought a beekeeping book for me and a book gift for a friend (I shall not divulge more in case my friend is reading here) XO

Now that we're home, it's full steam ahead toward this year's garden.  My seeds are all here waiting and I bought some seed starting mix yesterday ~ all systems are "go" to get the greenhouse ready!

Today will be full of prep work including setting up the sawhorses and doors into my usual makeshift seeding tables.  The greenhouse soil will be irrigated and lightly tilled for a day via chickens (to work in the winter rye cover crop and clear weed seeds), then amended with the contents of the worm farm.   From there, seeding will commence when the long range forecast looks favourable (our greenhouse is uninsulated and unheated).  A hard frost spells disaster in the "greenhouse" so I must be sure that the weather will cooperate...

Soon, the BROWN will turn to GREEN and I can't WAIT :)

  1. It's an exciting time of year, isn't it? I'm almost overwhelmed by my to-do list, but then I remember that it is only mid-April :) Hopefully tomorrow we will set the little greenhouse stand up in our dining room window and the kids and I will start a bunch of things. It's so exciting watching for the first sign of green!

  3. I wish we had your depressing brown here too. We are only now seeing the edges of flower gardens peeking out. Most areas are still under alot of snow. I did see crocus' today though so took a pic to put as my header pic.

  5. Hi there...I have been wondering if things are very busy with your garden and you just haven't had time to post. I'm hoping that it is only busy-ness that is keeping you away. And I hope that all is well and you find time to update us soon :)
