I feel it...

Fall is in the air!  The thermometer still says 30, but it somehow feels like 20 or 25.  The air has a definite nip to it which means that summer is nearly over.  Rosie and Melissa think so as well, as they've traded their sun frocks for hand knit woollens.

I've been busy preparing the children for the school year and am trying to get some more garden time in.  At the moment, my time is needed both indoors and out, so I'm struggling just a bit to balance it all.  Today was a purge of the younger children's bedroom in order to assess what is needed for the coming season change.  Fortunately, after some tidying and sorting, not much.  I took full advantage of the cleaned up space and steam cleaned the carpet in there.  My, was it dirty!  It feels SO good to have that room in order after a summer of neglect.  Funny how a good clean clears the head.

Meanwhile, Paige has been busy baking up whole wheat peanut butter dog biscuits.  It was getting dark, but she wanted a picture of her hard work so please forgive the horrible lighting.  Paige loves to bake and regularly tells me of her plans to own a world famous bakery.  I believe her and I can't wait for that :)

What have you been up to?

  1. We had a bit of snow here yesterday, very unusual and you would probably call it rain! We can feel our surge towards spring now, busy in a different way...

    1. Rose, I have no scientific explanation, but everyone is talking about it here. Sometime around mid-August, the air changes. We still have ambient temps registering high (close to or at 30C), but the air feels colder. I think it has a lot to do with the night time temps dipping much lower than in July, which really cools off the concrete, ground, water and houses. In the evening and in the morning, the air is really quite chilly. The above ground pool water is COLD and never warms up like it does in July because of too much heat loss at night. We have very extreme temp variations starting now... several years ago, I lost all my tomatoes to a hard frost in late August even though the daytime temps were still really warm.

  3. Can't imagine thinking 30 deg.C feels cool! Here in Scotland, we've barely reached 20C all summer. I'll need to trawl back through your blog and try and find the dog biscuit recipe - I've been feeding my beast slow baked and dried sweet potato slices, which he loves, but a change is always good.

  4. I love it when it starts feeling like fall! As a child, I always loved back-to-school time, and as a mom I was always excited for my kids cracking open the books. Paige would love a doggie bakery our nearest city here (wilmington) had in a trendy section. It was old-fashioned with antique bakery cases. (I never treated my dog to this, but I went, once, with my older daughter and her dog, as she lives in the city). It was so funny/quaint to see treats for dogs and dog food in that setting. They had an air conditioner blowing near the ground (it was summer) for dogs to stop and cool off by, and outside, they had fresh flowing water for the pampered dogs to drink! Very cute, but, needless to say, they went out of business. I guess you need a richer area to sell specialty dog foods. love, andrea

    1. Andrea, we have those bakeries here as well... I am amazed that they can sell enough biscuits to stay afloat... I hear they are rather expensive!

    1. Wow - 6 dogs!!!!! We only have one, but as he is so large, we don't have room for another one - particularly in the winter when we are all indoors. We have a hard enough time as it is tripping over just him all winter long... LOL
