Eye Candy

Beauty abounds in the kitchen today :)

hearty soup simmering with nearly all homegrown ingredients...
(I'm still astounded each time I pull home canned broth and stewed tomatoes from my pantry shelves!)

whole wheat banana muffins and bread made from organic wheat harvested a stone's throw from my kitchen

Kascha Rolls (Cherry Rolls) from my vintage Mennonite Country Cooking book using our canned cherries (again from the bounty of the pantry)

fresh citrus cleaner "brewing" on the windowsill

It's the simple things that please me now... the natural beauty in handmade things is incomparable..... this really IS the good life :)

  1. You must feel very proud of yourself. All that food looks wonderful and just think how good it is for you - no nasties lurking in there, just goodness. Eye candy, indeed!

  2. Mmmmm! Your cherry rolls look especially yummy. And how wonderful that you grew and put by almost everything! I love that same beauty you describe--nothing beats handmade :)

  3. I'm smiling right now, because I am feeling the same thrill as you about home grown produce, for 2 nights in a row now we are eating homegrown beans picked fresh from the garden, tomorrow night it will be a leek gratin, we can't eat our tomatoes quick enough, and just today I discovered my passionfruit vine is loaded with fruit for the first time! Considering I only have a small veggie patch I'm pretty thrilled with that.

  5. MMMMMM, I too love nothing more than a simmering pot of soup on a cold winter evening. Now if I could only have that pot of soup simmering on that wood stove I've been wanting to get installed!

  9. Susan, I forgot to link to the recipe but I have corrected that now :) It's a great cleaner and the longer you leave it brewing, the better the grease/soap scum cutting ability...

  10. Hi Sherrie. You sound so thrilled and proud of yourself, well done! It is amazing how the exhaustion and chaos of the growing and preserving season brings such joy. Thanks for the reminder, I needed it. Happy new year and I look forward to more in 2012. Alison

  12. Ooh yum yum!! Unfortunately it's too hot for soup down here in Oz at the moment....can't wait for the cooler weather to get back into slow cooking!! Home baked bread is next on my agenda to master.

  13. Wyoming Crane, click on the "citrus cleaner" link in the post - sorry it's not a bolder color - trying to figure out how to change that. It's under the pic of the jar of orange peels. :)
