Fire and Ice

Old Man Winter begins the descent.

Hoar Frost to remind us that November is the End of Autumn.

Glass panes laced in fractal art sparkle like Christmas

and the orange glow of the rising sun looked like fire through the ice.

* Edited to add these pictures of hoar frost on our trees from last winter...

  2. Beautiful photos.
I am from Australia, and am not familiar with the term hoar frost, what does it mean or where does that description come from?

  3. Per Wiki: Hoar frost (also called radiation frost or hoarfrost or pruina) refers to the white ice crystals, loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects, that form on cold clear nights when heat losses into the open skies cause objects to become colder than the surrounding air.

Per me: Hoar frost looks so pretty, it coats everything thickly with ice crystals - it looks like everything is dipped in white rock candy crystals :)

We don't see it all winter, it only occurs when the moisture/temps are just right ... so pretty! I'll try to add another pic form last winter into my post...

  4. Ooo, I have that exact thermometer but it has never pointed below the 0. In fact it has never pointed to below 15.

  5. LOL, Becky!!!!!!!! You wait until winter really hits us - that thermometer will read -30 and combined with the wind chill factor it will FEEL like -40 (not kidding - we actually have wind chill factored into our forecasts here)....

  6. OOoo! Is it called 'hoar' frost because it makes you go , 'Hooooaaaarr!" in a shivery voice? I am glad, it never gets that cold here, either.

  11. Absolutely gorgeous photos of the hoar frost, it isn't something we often see here, we get hard ground frosts but rarely the beauitiful hoar frosts.
